Your passport on your iPhone is getting closer, but there will be restrictions

REAL ID compliant, but it will only work at select domestic checkpoints

What’s happened? Apple is preparing Wallet to hold a digital version of your US passport for identity checks at select TSA lanes. Outlets covering the Money20/20 keynote say it’s REAL ID compliant and limited to domestic use.

  • On stage during her October 26 keynote at Money 20/20, Apple Pay and Wallet VP Jennifer Bailey kept her comments broad, saying passport support for iPhones running iOS 26 is coming “soon”, going on to say Apple has been replacing keys, tickets, and IDs, and has been “making great great progress” in the space.
  • MacRumors also notes that Apple’s iOS 26 page lists the feature as “coming later this year,” and notes it could arrive via a point update or a server-side switch.

This is important because: For frequent flyers, a government ID on your phone could make TSA identity checks feel as routine as tapping a boarding pass. The setup mirrors what Wallet already does for licenses and student IDs.

  • You scan the physical US passport in Wallet to create a digital version on iPhone or Apple Watch, according to outlet reporting.
  • At select TSA identity lanes, you present the digital version for domestic flights, Puerto Rico included.
  • Google is doing something similar, so an industry standard could refine the feature further.

Why should I care: Speed and convenience are the upside, fewer handoffs at the checkpoint and one less thing to fish out of a pocket. The tradeoff is risk, like breaches, identity theft, privacy exposure, and the fallout if you lose the device.

  • Keep a strong unique passcode or PIN, and turn on two factor authentication.
  • Update software promptly, then verify you are using legitimate services before sharing any ID.
  • Remember the limits, a physical passport is still required for any border crossing.

Okay, so what’s next? Timing points to later this year. How it appears may be quieter, either a point update or a server switch. Early availability will be patchy since TSA lanes come online in stages.

  • Watch for Wallet prompts when the feature flips on, then follow the on screen steps to add your document.
  • Support starts with US passports.
  • Apple also points to using Digital ID for age and identity checks in apps, online, and in stores.

Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft review: The luxury ride to digital note-taking
It wants to be your indispensable digital diary, but it will test your Kindle loyalty, too.
Amazon Kindle Scribe

Quick Take

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is a new breed of e-readers from Amazon. Aside from being your reading companion, it also wants to double as your trusty note-taking device. And it does a terrific job at serving as a digital diary. The color display does a fine job of replicating the sensation of writing on paper, without any of the input lag woes you would notice on an ordinary tablet.

Apple’s foldable is keeping Camera Control, but one-handed photography on a big foldable sounds tricky
Apple went through some serious engineering gymnastics to make it happen, but is it worth it?
Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone

Apple's first foldable iPhone has been the subject of countless leaks, and the latest one comes from Weibo leaker Instant Digital. As reported by Notebookcheck, the leak suggests that the iPhone Fold will include the Camera Control button, despite being thinner than the iPhone Air when unfolded.

That's no small feat. Fitting the Camera Control button into a device that slim must have required some serious engineering work on Apple's part. But apparently, Apple felt it was worth it.

Your iPhone is getting smarter: Here’s what Apple Intelligence can do in iOS 27
Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone

Apple has been steadily building out Apple Intelligence since its debut, and iOS 27 could be the most ambitious update to that effort yet. None of this is official yet, but the breadcrumbs are pretty convincing.
