iWatch: Apple’s going for a September release, new report claims

Until recently, things were quiet on the matter of Apple’s so-called iWatch. It was as if the rumor stew had boiled dry, or left on simmer while consumer attention was caught by the vast, exciting menu of other wrist-based computers hitting the market.

Well, in the last few days alone, things started cooking again. At the start of the week, a report from China’s Economic Daily, spotted by tech news publication DigiTimes, suggested the Cupertino company’s smartwatch would land in Q3 of this year, and that Apple expects to ship some 65 million units by the beginning of 2015.

Backing this up is another DigiTimes report, published Tuesday, suggesting three companies in the supply chain – specifically Flexium Interconnect, Zhen Ding Technology Holding, and Career Technology – have delivered samples of flexible circuit boards to Apple for inspection.

The report even goes for a more specific unveiling date, naming September as the month when Apple boss Tim Cook is most likely to take to the stage with the iWatch up his sleeve.

It’d be fair to say that a blind assassin would have a reasonable chance of achieving a more impressive hit rate than DigiTimes. But the Taiwanese publication, which is located close to firms involved in making parts for many of Apple’s tech products, has called it right on several occasions in the past, and for the last nine months has continued to maintain that Apple plans to launch the iWatch in the second half of this year.

In January we heard that Apple engineers were struggling with screen technology for the device, an issue apparently related to the iWatch’s battery life. Judging by this week’s reports, however, things are back on track, with Apple looking to launch in the next five months.

One thing’s for sure: If the company is intending to launch a smartwatch, we can imagine – with all the devices currently coming to market – it’ll be keen to present its own effort to consumers sooner rather than later.

Samsung is killing Vascular Load on Galaxy Watches
Blood pressure on Samsung Galaxy Watch 8.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watches have been leaning harder into health features with every generation. Sleep scores, heart metrics, blood pressure, and much more are all big selling points. Samsung is removing the standalone Vascular Load feature for Galaxy Watch users in the United States.

According to a Samsung Health notice spotted by users on Reddit (via SammyGuru), the feature will no longer be available starting in late July with Samsung Health 7.0 and the One UI Watch 9 update. Samsung’s notice reportedly says existing Vascular Load records will also disappear from Samsung Health once the feature is removed. Users who want to keep that history need to export their personal data in advance through Samsung Health settings.

My smartwatch let me doomscroll from my wrist
Oppo Watch X3 Media Controls

While smartwatches were built to make us more health-conscious and have us reach for our phones less often. I always believed that a second (smaller) screen on your wrist basically can be just as distracting as your smartphone, and the Oppo Watch X3 decided to stop pretending by doubling down on this.

The Oppo Watch X3 comes with a dedicated remote control feature that lets me control my phone from my wrist, and I am having way too much fun messing around with it. This sounds ridiculous, but it has also been surprisingly handy.

Samsung Galaxy Glasses leak

While Samsung already has a bunch of wearables, its upcoming smart glasses might tighten the experience even further. A new leak from SammyGuru offers an early look at the Galaxy Glasses Manager app, the companion app Samsung is expected to use for its new smart glasses.

The leak does not reveal final pricing, battery life, launch date, or every hardware spec. Unlike your typical leak that just hints at a device, the companion app actually makes it sound more real.
