Video game adaptations are on a hot streak. Films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were massive box office hits, while series like The Last Of Us and Fallout have made for stellar TV shows.

While there have been some great video game movies, some have failed to capture the true spirit of a game on film. Luckily, more effort and resources are being poured into new adaptations given the success of the projects mentioned above — we’re starting to see more and more video game films in the works and the overall quality appears to have hit a massive spike in recent years. With so many great video game franchises, every gamer believes their favorite game should be the next one to get a film.

It can be hard to pay attention to all the rumors, announcements, and developments (these films take years to make sometimes!), so we’ve gathered all the info you need to keep up with all upcoming video game movies below.

Video game movie adaptions with release dates

Minecraft: The Movie (April 4, 2025)

Yes, there’s going to be a Minecraft movie. While the project has been on the table for years and has switched hands a few times, it looks like it is finally set to release in early 2025. There hasn’t been a trailer released yet, but we have this basic plot description from Warner Bros.: “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”

The cast includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa,  Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon and it’ll be directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre).

This one is going to be quite an event, and it will undoubtedly be a box-office hit because, if you weren’t aware, Minecraft is one of the bestselling games of all time. The children yearn for the mines, as they say.

Until Dawn (April 25, 2025)

The game itself was already similar to an interactive horror movie, complete with a star-studded cast and a thick layer of teen drama. After getting a remake and PC port, a film adaptation is the next step for Until Dawn due out in April. However, this won’t be a third retelling of the game. Instead, this film will feature a new cast in an all-new horror scenario, though still keep Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill. We haven’t seen any footage yet to determine what the new premise will be, but you can count on it being bloody and perhaps a little bit supernatural.

Mortal Kombat 2 (October 24, 2025)

Both the film franchise and the Mortal Kombat games have now each had at least one reboot so it is easy to get confused on what’s new, but Mortal Kombat 2 the movie is the direct sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat. Simon McQuoid is set to return as director, with Karl Urban cast as the iconic Johnny Cage and will supposedly be focused on an actual tournament against Outworld. All the characters who survived the first film will return with their existing cast, including Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5, 2025)

Universal Pictures

After a highly successful first film, there is still so much material left to work with from the massively popular horror game franchise that is going back to theaters to end 2025. Nothing official has been confirmed about the sequel, but there were plenty of hints as to where the story could go left unanswered in the first film. The only cast members attached right now are Josh Hutcherson as Mike, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, Piper Rubio as Abby, and Matthew Lillard as William Afton. Whatever direction the story ends up going, this is not one for the faint of heart. The film’s current tagline reads “Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances.” so no doubt the stakes are going to be raised.

Street Fighter (March 20, 2026)

Fans of the best fighting games will be eating good at the movies when Street Fighter hits not even six months after Mortal Kombat. This also won’t be the first time we’ve seen Capcom’s iconic fighter on the big screen, but we’ve never had a legitimately good one. With the games being better than ever, hopefully, this one isn’t a complete flop. We don’t know any details yet, but we feel confident saying there will be plenty of fighting, perhaps on some streets.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel (April 3, 2026)

Universal Pictures

While The Super Mario Bros. Movie may not have had the depth that older gamers wanted it to have, it was a massive success, and we’re only at the beginning of Universal Pictures’ inevitable string of Mario movies.

The cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is expected to remain the same, with potential additions of new characters like Wario, Waluigi, and Rosalina.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri has confirmed that the film will be released in early 2026. We don’t know anything else about the film right now.

Raging Wolverine in Marvel's Wolverine game

Insomniac Games used Sony’s latest State of Play to show an extended gameplay trailer for its PS5 exclusive, and the footage makes it pretty clear that this is a Wolverine game built around blood, rage, and close-range brutality.

The trailer shows Logan slicing through Reavers with claw attacks, stealth kills, airborne ambushes, and execution-style finishers that leave the screen covered in blood. The combat appears fast and aggressive, with Logan able to parry, close gaps, and tear through enemies using Techniques such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will make a splash early next year on the PlayStation 5
Firearm, Weapon, Gun

Lara Croft is heading back to where it all began, but this isn’t a simple remaster. Revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play showcase, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches on PlayStation 5 on February 12, 2027, bringing a full-scale reimagining of the original 1996 adventure.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics alongside Flying Wild Hog and powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game aims to recreate Lara’s first expedition with the kind of scale and detail that simply wasn’t possible three decades ago. And based on the first gameplay footage, it’s shaping up to be much more than a nostalgia trip.

Control Resonant lands in September with a new hero to drive the sibling arc
The September PS5 sequel puts Dylan in control, shifting Remedy’s supernatural saga toward its messier family conflict.
Adult, Male, Man

Control Resonant launches globally on PS5 on September 24, and Remedy is making a cleaner break from the first game than a new city alone would suggest. Dylan Faden, not Jesse, is the playable character this time.

That choice gives the sequel a sharper charge. Dylan was once treated as a threat, but Control Resonant puts him at the center of a story about power, damage, and the bond that still ties him to Jesse.
