AMD’s Ryzen 4 laptop CPU beats an Intel desktop chip in this leaked benchmark

AMD made some audacious claims about its freshly announced Ryzen 4000 laptop processors, especially compared what Intel currently offers.

Now, thanks to a leak on Twitter, we see the Ryzen part giving Intel’s 9th-gen Core i7-9700K processor a run for its money in Underwriters Laboratories’ processor test when benchmarked using the Time Spy tool.

While AMD took the wraps off its Zen 2 processor earlier this year at CES 2020, we didn’t know just how the 8-core, 16 threaded desktop CPU will perform. Ryzen 7 4800H is AMD’s most powerful mobile processor, made for thin gaming and content creation laptops.

In this test, AMD’s processor scored 8,350 points, edging out the Intel Core i7-9700K’s 8,200 points in the physics score, TechRadar reported. Though the Ryzen 7 4800 processor score still trails AMD’s more advanced desktop processors designed for workstation and gaming use — the Ryzen 7 3700X, for example, scored 10,180 points — it shows that AMD is not only closing the performance gap with its competitor, but is leading beating its rival.

What’s impressive with this early leaked benchmark is that AMD’s mobile silicon is beating out one of Intel’s best desktop processors. AMD previously touted that in graphics performance, the Ryzen 7 4800H can beat Intel’s Core i7-9700 with double-digit percent gains while using less than half the thermal design power. It’d be interesting to see how AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800H performs against Intel’s newly announced Tiger Lake processors that are also designed for mobile.

During AMD’s presentation at CES, the company claimed that its mobile processor delivers four percent better results than Intel’s 10th-gen Core i7-1065G7 in single-threaded performance and up to 90 percent better multi-threaded performance when benchmarked using the Cinebench R20 tool. The company also claimed that its processor also excelled when compared to Intel’s 10th-gen chipset in the graphics department, with a 28% better Time Spy Extreme result.

Some of the newest laptops announced at CES with AMD’s new mobile Ryzen processors include Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 7 and the Asus Zephyrus G14. AMD is bullish on its processor, with the company claiming that there are 12 new laptops planned during the first quarter of this year with its performance-topping CPU.

Given how well Ryzen CPUs have been performing, if AMD can get its partners to ship more designs with its mobile Ryzen processor inside, it’d be a major coup for the company in the processor space and a win for discerning PC users who need every bit of performance they can squeeze on the go.
