Love it or hate it, everyone has an opinion on Call of Duty. The long-running first-person shooter franchise is one of the most successful video game series of all time, and it’s come a long way – both in terms of graphical fidelity and the way it’s jumped around the timeline of war.

While the original game marked a cinematic look at World War II, its successors have taken us across Vietnam, the Cold War, the modern-day, and even to space. The series’ also set the blueprint for online multiplayer across the medium with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare pioneering loadouts and persistent upgrades.
