Metal Gear Solid movie may have found its director

A movie based on the Metal Gear Solid game franchise has been in the works for so long now that fans have learned to appreciate any update without actually getting their hopes up too high that the project will make it to the screen. However, the latest news could be cause for actual, this-may-finally-happen celebration.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Sony Pictures is in talks with filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct Metal Gear Solid, which will reportedly tell the story of Solid Snake’s mission to infiltrate a nuclear weapons facility that has been taken over by Foxhound, a renegade special forces unit. That’s the rough story of the first Metal Gear Solid game, for those not versed in the series lore.

While Vogt-Roberts is a relative newcomer to directing feature films, his 2013 debut feature The Kings Of Summer — about a group of teenage friends who spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land — was extremely well received and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, as well as earning awards and nominations at various other film festivals. The filmmaker has also done quite a bit of work behind the camera on comedy projects, which might seem a bit incongruous with Metal Gear Solid, but could hint at a nice grasp of some of the lighter moments in the series.

Prior to this news, the last update we received on Metal Gear Solid was from producer Avid Arad, who told Digital Trends (during an interview for The Amazing Spider-Man 2) that the film was being envisioned as “a huge, biblical story.”

There is no release date set for Metal Gear Solid at this point.
