Is Minecraft cross-platform? Bedrock, Java, and console cross-play explained

Yes, but only if everyone is on the same edition. Bedrock supports broad cross-play, while Java stays in its own desktop ecosystem.

Minecraft is an endless sandbox of fun to explore one’s creativity. As great as it is to play alone, it is also one of the best co-op games. Building bases, fighting monsters, and crafting strong weapons are all better with one or more friends to share the adventure with. Because Minecraft is available on almost anything with a screen, you would assume you could play with anyone, but the answer isn’t quite that simple.

Playing with friends on a shared server is one of the greatest ways to experience Minecraft, just like it is for Terraria or GTA V. But in today’s gaming landscape, there is a wide variety of platforms on which people play the game, which may lead you to wonder if this is a cross-platform game

Minecraft is cross-platform, but the answer depends on which version you’re playing. Bedrock Edition supports cross-play across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, mobile, and Chromebook. Java Edition supports multiplayer too, but only with other Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java and Bedrock do not officially play together.

Minecraft Bedrock vs. Java: what actually supports cross-play

Minecraft is split into two multiplayer ecosystems. Bedrock is the version built for broad cross-platform play across consoles, mobile, Chromebook, and Windows. Java is the desktop version, and its multiplayer support stays within Windows, macOS, and Linux.

That distinction matters most on Windows, where Mojang bundles both versions together. Even if you own both, you still need to launch the same edition your friends are using. If they’re on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile, you need Bedrock. If they’re on Java for desktop, you need Java.

Java Edition is not an Xbox version. Official Minecraft documentation places Java on Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock covers Windows, consoles, mobile, and Chromebook.

How to play with friends on different platforms

For cross-play to work, everyone needs to be on the same edition first. On Bedrock, players sign in with a Microsoft account, add friends through that system, and then join the same world, Realm, or server. Mojang’s support pages say Bedrock players can join a friend’s online world, a Realm, or a multiplayer server.

Console players may also need the platform’s paid online subscription for multiplayer. Mojang’s multiplayer requirements page says players must have the matching edition installed to join that edition’s worlds, servers, and Realms, and console online services are required where applicable.

Are Realms cross-platform?

Yes, but only within the same edition. Bedrock Realms work across supported Bedrock platforms. Java Realms work across Windows, macOS, and Linux. A Bedrock player cannot officially join a Java Realm, and a Java player cannot officially join a Bedrock Realm.

FAQ

Is Minecraft cross-platform on PC and Xbox?
Yes, if the PC player is using Bedrock Edition on Windows. Java does not officially cross-play with Xbox.

Can Java and Bedrock play together?
Not officially. They are separate multiplayer ecosystems.

Do you need a Microsoft account for cross-play?
For Bedrock cross-play, yes.

Do console players need an online subscription?
Usually yes, where the platform requires it for multiplayer.

If you want the simplest possible rule to remember, it’s this: Bedrock is the cross-platform version for most people, and Java is the desktop-only multiplayer ecosystem. Everything else is just Minecraft making a very simple question sound like tax law.

Grand Theft Auto 5

With Grand Theft Auto 6 now just months away, Rockstar Games is giving longtime Grand Theft Auto 5 players a reason to revisit Los Santos. The company has announced that owners of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of GTA 5 will receive a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.

The move comes as Rockstar ramps up excitement for GTA 6, which is currently scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Previously, upgrading from the older console versions to the current-generation release required a separate purchase, typically costing around $10. Beginning Thursday, however, eligible players will be able to move to the newer version at no additional cost.
