Liquid cooling tech from PCs is finally ready for phones, and I’m pretty excited.

Active liquid cooling on smartphones could unlock sustained high performance during gaming, multitasking, and intensive workloads without thermal throttling.

What’s happened? The Chinese consumer electronics brand RedMagic is bringing a key desktop-grade innovation to smartphones to improve their sustained performance: liquid cooling.

  • At the RedMagic Tech Conference, the company introduced the first mass-produced liquid cooling system specifically designed for smartphones.
  • It includes a fluorinated cooling liquid that operates between -40°C and 70°C and an active pump that sends the coolant to the required parts of the mechanism.
  • The system also uses a piezoelectric micropump that actively circulates the coolant through dedicated micro-channels, achieving a breakthrough in miniaturization technology.

Why is this important? Unlike vapor chambers, which use a liquid that heats, evaporates away from the heat-generating components, and then condenses back into a liquid, RedMagic’s technology features an active pump to circulate the coolant around the critical components (similar to those found on desktops).

  • Liquid cooling has been the gold standard for thermal management in PCs and servers, helping to maintain optimal temperatures during sustained workloads.
  • Bringing the technology to smartphones will dramatically improve heat dissipation, a critical factor in determining the peak performance (and the endurance) of a smartphone.
  • The improvement could benefit workflows like intensive gaming or on-device AI applications, alleviating the performance bottleneck that comes with the rise in temperature.

Why should I care? For end users like you and me, the liquid cooling system will keep smartphones cooler, even under intense workloads, and provide more stable performance.

  • For instance, the technology could help sustain higher frame rates in a video game for a longer period.
  • Added thermal stability also prolongs the overall lifespan of a smartphone’s battery.
  • Chip manufacturers might leverage the technology to create even more powerful smartphone processors.

OK, what’s next? I can see the active liquid cooling mechanism making its way to gaming smartphones. In fact, the company has confirmed that the upcoming RedMagic 11 Pro series will feature the liquid cooling system as well as the air cooling technology we’ve seen on the RedMagic 10 Pro. Other manufacturers, particularly those in China, could either implement the technology in their smartphones or develop a similar one in the near future.

Apple is selling you defective chips, and you’re happily buying them
Apple's budget devices have a secret that is surprisingly smart
Macbook concept with A18 Pro processor.

Apple has a very clever trick up its sleeve when it comes to its silicon. The company is selling you chips that did not fully make the cut. But the really funny part is, you probably never noticed.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal revealed that Apple has built a strong business around using processors with slight defects or lower-performing parts in cheaper products. The best example of this is the new $599 MacBook Neo, which uses Apple’s A18 Pro chip but with a 5-core graphics processor, rather than the version with one more GPU core used in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

Apple is preparing a major expansion of its AI features for iPhones and iPads with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The update is expected to bring AI-powered writing assistance, natural-language app shortcuts, smarter Siri integrations, and even AI-generated wallpapers as Apple tries to catch up with rivals like Google and Samsung in consumer AI features.

The upcoming features are expected to be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June ahead of a public release later this year.

iOS 27 could fix a huge frustration with the Shortcuts app and I can’t wait for it
"Hey Siri, create a shortcut for me that snaps a picture of my food, logs the nutritional value, and then reminds me to burn calories after six hours. Please?"

For years, the Shortcuts app on the iPhone has remained one of the most frustrating parts of the user experience. On one hand, it's an utterly powerful app to create automations and perform multi-step tasks in a jiffy. However, the process of creating a shortcut has been pretty complicated and almost a test of patience.

It appears that Apple has finally listened to the feedback of iPhone users and is planning to give a major functional overhaul to the Shortcuts app with the release of iOS 2027. As per  Bloomberg, Apple will finally let users describe the exact shortcut they want, in natural language, and the AI will create it for them.
